An Evening at THE MANILA OBSERVATORY :
“Stargazing, Research Papers, Baguio Astronomy Camp, Pastas and Pizzas”
Cloudiness and intermittent rain showers the whole day of April 9, 2011 did not prevent members and friends of the Philippine Astronomical Society to push through with the scheduled stargazing at the Manila Observatory.
Attendees started to arrive before 6:00 PM and the celestial viewing was never totally shut down by the prevailing weather condition. The major thrillers that entertained the sky watchers were the Moon, Saturn, Orion, Winter Triangle, Big Dipper, Polaris, Southern Cross, Omega Centauri, Canis Major, Canis Minor, Leo, Taurus, and other constellations. Newtonian six (6”) inch reflector and a four (4”) refractor telescopes were used which were skillfully handled in succession by Messrs. Ronald Tanco, Hernan Dizon, Leo Manosca, Jake Irlandez, Ian Mark Alas, and others.
As for some, the most amazing was the reappearance “out of the dark” of the come-backing member and former PAS officer Miss Mary Jane Plaza. Cheers !
Meanwhile, research papers on inventory of various instruments locally available among various institutions in the Philippines that can be used for astronomy and astrophysics research was submitted to CG Dacanay. The paper is the consolidated effort of Ghela Lequiron, Pauline Divinagracia, and Miguel Artificio. The same shall be reviewed for final presentation during monthly meetings by participating institutions ( Manila Observatory, UP National Institute of Geological Sciences, UP National Institute of Physics, UP Pagasa, UP Nismed, etc.). This is in line with PAS’ vision and mission to propel the science of astronomy to achieve scientific excellence among Filipinos.
On the other hand, everyone agreed and was thrilled on the date of the scheduled “Summer Astrocamp in Baguio” which will be on May 6 to 8, 2011. Excitement surged suddenly upon hearing of the probability of staging this structured astronomy education program culminating on a stargazing on mountain top plus the chance of seeing the now famous “Stardust Observatory” and meeting personally the “astro maestro” John Nasser. Details of program/activities to follow.
As the evening became cloudier, members and officers who stood their ground finally call off the day by around 10:30 PM and dropped by their favorite nearby pizza parlor along Katipunan and swear for another fun and celestial adventure very soon.
March 26-28 - Seminar-training in Samar-Leyte under the auspices of BALUD - an internationally recognized development project for poor communities.
A BALUD Project "International Training Seminar on Astronomy and Universe Awareness" was held on March 26 to 28 at Basey 1 District Conference Hall, Samar. BALUD invited the Philippine Astronomical Society to participate in this activity, and this was the Philippine Astronomical Society's contribution to the internationally recognized IAU Unawe Project/ BALUD Project, which is also recognized by DLSU, Imperial College of London, and even by the Queen of UK herself. Check www.baludproject.org for more details.
The Training Seminar on Astronomy and Universe Awareness was made possible by the following key persons: Dr. Thijs Kouwenhoven, Don Eliseo Prisno III, Jonas Hermes, and Leah Villalon for the PAS coordination. Representing PAS were Dr. Romar Sese, Jennifer Baltazar, and Lordnico Mendoza who gave a lecture each on different topics on astronomy. (More pictures to come.)

Please check the reports on the NAW celebrations in the NAW page.
● "PASilip: A Free Public Moon Watching Night"
As part of the International Year of Astronony 2009 and in line with the goal of the Philippine Astronomical Society to foster widespread public interest toward astronomy, PAS held “PASilip: A Free Public Moon Watching Night”, a year-long special free public viewing sessions dedicated to the moon.
PAS chose dates when the moon is between the crescent and waxing gibbous phases to provide the general public a great view of lunar features such as mountains, craters and seas. The event also stimulated the public to look directly at the skies and eventually raising awareness of the night sky.
PAS had set up different telescopes and binoculars in public places like mall parking lots, local and national parks, and schools within and outside Metro Manila from 7 to 9 pm.
