In celebration of World Space Week, Rizal Technological University and Philippine Astronomical Society sponsored two lectures last October 7, 2007 held at RTU, Bonifacio Avenue, Mandaluyong City. A total of 99 RTU students and 10 members of PAS attended the class.
Engr. Camilo G. Dacanay presented the first lecture entitled Aerospace Science The Physics of Outer Space Exploration. He discussed about the significance of space exploration by enumerating the kinds of harmful radiation and cosmic rays present in space, cosmic catastrophes and the meaning of gravity. Gravity was defined as escape velocities from other bodies in space. He ended with a topic on how rockets work and how to put them into orbit. Engr. Dacanay also asked a trivia question wherein the winner will win 3 back issues of Astronomy magazine. The lucky astronomy enthusiast was Kim Michael P. Gonzales.
Mr. Antonio D. Sing taught about Variable Stars Telescope Simulator. He lectured on how to find, compare variable stars and interpolate magnitudes using AAUSO star chart. AAUSO stands for American Association of Variable Star Observers. A hands on experience in determining star brightness was also learned by the attendees of this topic.
This event was successful because students not only gained new knowledge from the two talks but was also given a chance to experience first hand on how amateur astronomers work to help improve humanity through space. They were also given certificates for taking part in the event.
